As some of you may know—or maybe you don’t for whatever reason—but the original book, The Demon’s Fate, was meant as a one-off. The way it was written and structured, I wanted it to be a self-contained story. I wanted to do things in the book that I couldn’t elsewhere, and if you read how the story ends, then you already know.
One thing about writing the first book, there’s not much world building. The necessary elements are there, things you must absolutely have, but for the most part, the world building gives the story shape rather than become a component like say Hogwarts, Hoth, or Gotham. So, coming into book 2, I knew I had to worldbuild in earnest.
But nearing the completion of the book and getting ready to launch it, I thought to myself, “What if I left the door cracked open? This can be a self contained story, but if I wanted to come back, I could so long as the groundwork was laid within.”
So, I put a little bit in there, altering a few sentences in key places, pop goes the weasel, and Bob’s your uncle.
