Behind the scenes, it’s been a grueling grind since the last update, and I definitely hit warp speed there for a while. The hard part’s just getting started. We’re past the point of mercy, so let’s see the blood of it.

The cleanup/polish mode of The Demon’s Fate (TDF), book 1 of the Warmaster Series (WMS), has officially been completed. I didn’t go through it once, and I certainly didn’t stop at twice. Third time’s the charm for my sophomore book.

For the first draft, I read the book, cringed a bit, and fixed clunky sentences where the prose still wandered in discovery mode. I cut some redundant things, dialed back the slight heavy-handed exposition, and sharpened characters. The second pass focused on word choice and prose tightening. The third, I just attacked grammar and punctuation.

To be fair, TDF stood on its own, but when I look back on a book written in 2017, I’ve evolved as a writer. Eight years is quite the tonal shift. While two moral quandaries nestle in the book—towards the middle and end—this is by far my cleanest, most PG-13 book I’ve written. Being forthright, that’s not where my strength lies. I don’t think I’ll ever write another book like that.

What drew me to TDF in the first place? Two things: a new, captivating idea, and writing something different than my main series—after writing it for 15 years. With the ideas I’m kicking around for the WMS, I think we can expect to see the darker elements creep into the story.

Next on the agenda:

The cover for The Dark Portal, then setting up re-covers for The Demon’s Fate and Flawed to the Core before going wide with them both. For the non-industry folks, that means my books will be available on all platforms instead of just Amazon. Keep your eyes on those warfronts.

A little side plot—I’ve started the earliest bits of writing for Vol. VIII of the Dark Legacy Series. Don’t know how much I will write on this first exploration, but the final book is now officially underway.
